Storm activity is expected Sunday afternoon, July 9 into Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Between 2 and 3 inches of rainfall is expected in areas shown in darker green in the first image above from AccuWeather.com.

"This may result in flooding of urban, low-lying or poor drainage areas, and small streams and creeks," the National Weather Service said in a statement issued Friday morning, July 7. "At this time, the best chance for heavy rainfall will be Sunday afternoon and night as a frontal wave along a stalled-out boundary potentially moves into the area.

"There is still a decent amount of uncertainty where the axis of heaviest rainfall will be."

Ahead of the system's arrival, there will be a mix of sun and clouds on Friday, July 7 with a high temperature in the upper-80s and a slight chance for showers and storms from mid-afternoon until early evening.

Clouds will increase on Saturday, July 8, with breaks of sun at times, and a high temperature in the mid-80s.

There will be another chance for scattered storms in the afternoon and evening.

On Sunday, there should be scattered showers in the morning before showers, and storms become likely starting in the early afternoon into early in the evening as the storm moves through.

"Rainfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour in some locations as the system moves along on Sunday from the southern Appalachians and mid-Atlantic to eastern New York and central and western New England from Sunday night to early Monday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

Sunday's high temperature will generally be around 80 degrees.

Clouds will linger on Monday, July 10 with a chance for showers and scattered storms. The high temperature will be in the mid-70s.
